The goal of this course is to give participants a thorough foundation in the application of Western science to Hatha yoga. This is most effectively taught in a progressive manner, which includes presentation, review and application. Each day will consist of an interactive lecture, including 3D visuals and other video material relating to the anatomy and biomechanics for yoga, while focusing on a specific body region each day. Lectures will be balanced with actual practice of asanas and pranayama in a manner designed to focus on application of the material covered during the didactic portion of the workshop.
The daily lecture/asana period is structured as follows in 5 hour/day sessions (1 ½ hour break for lunch midway through session):
Fundamentals of Anatomy, Biomechanics and Therapeutics for Hatha Yoga:
• Joint structure and function, including concepts such as joint reaction forces, joint coupling and rhythm, joint stability and mobility, and pathological considerations.
• Muscle physiology, including reflex arcs, PNF, optimal stretching.
• Breathing mechanics and physiology.
• Myofascial connections.
• Pose analysis, with application of the Bandha Yoga Codex.
• How to use knowledge of biomechanics to develop and communicate your own effective cues for refining and deepening poses.
• Injury prevention for yoga.
• Therapeutic application of yoga for specific conditions.
Dr.Ray will be teaching the fundamentals in a progressive manner; this involves daily review, with each day building on the material covered previously. We will also be applying these fundamental concepts during the lecture period to a series of important foundational poses, including:
• Padmasana (lotus)
